Hashtags to Use at the 2012 Convention

This page contains a full list of hashtags to use at the 2012 Convention. Hashtags are essential to optimizing your Twitter experience, especially if you are tweeting from an event with many different topics, themes, or activities (like our convention). Hashtags are keywords with a "#" in front of them. They cannot contain spaces or punctuation. Below are the basics, but we also recommend referencing this Mashable article about using Twitter hashtags.

  • You can use multiple tags together, so a tweet that ends with "#APSCU2012  #HigherEd" can be understood to be related to both the 2012 Convention as well as Higher Education.
  • You can search on a tag using search.twitter.com to view a real-time feed of tweets using a specific hashtag - check out the search for #APSCU2012
  • Tags are not case-sensitive, so #APSCU2012 and #apscu2012 are the same.

Basic Twitter Tips

Twitter can optimize your convention experience, whether you are here with us or not. This section is designed to equip new users with Twitter basics.

How to Create a Twitter Account:

All you need is an email address. Then go to Twitter.com and follow the instructions. If you need more info, check out this post by eHow.

Key Concepts

  • Tweets - a Tweet is a message or update sent through Twitter. It has a maximum limit of 140 characters. It is good practice to restrict tweets to 120 characters, leaving 20 characters free to enable "Retweeting" of messages.
  • Followers / Following - People follow accounts that are of interest to them. User A "Follows" User B by clicking on the +Follow button. User A will then see all of User B's updates. The reverse is not true. User A can follow User B, but User B is not obligated to follow User A. User B will therefore not see User A's updates. Increasing the number of followers is usually done by tweeting about topics of interest and by adding value to conversations.
  • Direct Messages - When two Twitter users follow each other mutually they can send each other private "Direct Messages." These are private and cannot be viewed by other followers.
  • @ Username Replies - When a user starts a message with @+ another user's username it is considered a reply - where the intent is to say something to that user.
  • Hashtags (#) - Hashtags are used to tag a tweet relating to a specific theme to facilitate search. If you click on a hash tag within a tweet, it will take you to a search stream on that topic. Using hash tags in your tweets allows your messages to appear in those search streams, which is another way for users to find your account.
